One Room Challenge Kitchen Reno

My love for creating started with Clothing and quickly moved to an equal if not greater love when I moved into my new Studio Apt when I was 18. I loved that it was my own space and if was to be clean and organized was all up to me. I oddly did not want to throw my clothes on the floor as if it were an extension of my closet anymore (sorry mom) and dishes in the sink was no longer ok with as well. I wanted to feel good about the space I was in and as my rooms grew larger over time the creative wheel grew in me as well.

My first true remodel was in my downtown 1920’s Portland, Oregon home. This renovation was more due to the pricing market and and what I could afford..a true fixer upper. I learned so much because I made a ton of mistakes and was pushed to be creative on a shoe string budget. I painted walls and ceilings…every single one to be exact. I stenciled a Japanese print in gold on pink walls and made a thrift store chandelier. This was all before I ever heard for DIY and Pinterest did not exist. Quite frankly everything in my life was DO IT YOURSELF!

So now on to why I decided to start this blog and I don’t want to sound that professional about it as well. This is a page I decided to document my One Room Challenge (www.oneroomchallenge) of my kitchen. It is a challenge to start with because I its actually turning three rooms into one. The kitchen was small of 10x12 for a 3100 sq ft home. The separate dining was just that…separate and that made it one of the most unused rooms unless we had dinner parties.

ORC Week 3 No more dirty feet

I am not going to lie. This week has been hard…for many reasons. First, I have been dealing with vertigo and it is really draining to me. Second, I am walking on dirty sub-floors that have random tools just ready for me to stub my toe or trip on. This is not a good combination, trust me. The other part is that I miss my painting and I can not seem to juggle all the worlds I am currently living in. My art is also my career so I have to work on projects in the middle of all this chaos and I have fallen way behind. I am ready to be done.

BUT…I have great news. Actually amazing news..WE HAVE FLOORS!! We were able to lay 450 sq ft of 2ft by 4ft tile that we realized right away is not very forgiving. The tile has to be perfectly flat and perfectly arranged or cracking will be its destiny. My husband is extremely disciplined and exacting so he was able to plow through it in 2 days. It seems like a miracle! I was able to grout the entire floor and that was really satisfying. Seeing the floors come together really sent us flying…to the couch, for a drink, to celebrate.

Next came the hardware. I was worried about the size and color when I ordered them. That is also another difficult part of this project is ordering so many items online and not knowing what I will be getting until the package is dropped off at my front door. But I have to say that I was overjoyed when I opened the box from ALL MODERN. The champagne brass handles and large knobs are beautiful. It really does look like jewelry for my cabinets. I had my husband put one on the pantry door immediately and I just stared at it like it was my first boyfriend on the playground. The weight of the hardware is so heavy that it feels like some of the 15-20$ a piece hardware but they were not..5.99$ is what paid and I feel like I am part of kitchen royalty. Love!

I really wanted to Wow you this week with my blogging style (insert eye roll) but I am so tired. We are coming on to the home stretch and I just know that all my energy will come roaring back and this coming week will be GREAT!! haha I am happy that I do not have to have walk around with dirty feet and I can open my cabinet doors. The counter tops should be in soon…well maybe 2 weeks. I really miss my sink. Its incredible what you miss when you really never thought much of it on an a day to day. The sink will be higher on my priority list of what I am thankful for from now on, I assure you.

Now for the the royal throne of the room. My new stove. It is a gas 36 inch stainless steel Zline Professional beauty and a tear fell when I took off the dust cloth that it was covered in. This stove is literally a dream of mine. I feel so special every time it glimmers in my side view and I have to pause to enjoy her shine. And yes, the day we installed her we had Rib Eye Steak to baptize her into our home. I am thrilled we decided to make this our splurge with our budget. My stove and my tile make me feel like I am finally an real adult. haha
